Preparation of Room before client arrival
How to practice Reiki. This case study goes through a complete reiki treatment and shows you how to use all the correct hand positions and the feelings that reiki brings to both the therapist and the client.
Before my client arrived, I made it priority that I have ensured that my sign into my treatment room is on do not disturb, I made sure that my couch and treatment room including all surfaces and floors are disinfected and clean as this is for health and safety purposes of the work placement.
Setting the scene
I have made it a priority that the room was of the right temperature as it was a hot day So I closed the blinds a little, making sure there was still enough light for my client to fill out any necessary information on the client questionnaire record sheet, as I opened a window to help it cool down a little, so that the environment was comfortable for my client and myself to be in when she arrives. Having then cleansed the room with a smudge sage stick, to eliminate any negative energies that may have accumulated previously to encourage positive energies to build up, I then turned on my Himalayan salt lamp.
This helps to create a calming but relaxing environment and ambient glow to the room. This will help with my client to feel relaxed and not anxious, as I am aware that this will be her first reiki treatment. I will be covering all the Reiki Hand Positions.
Electric Devices
Switching off my mobile phone and any other devices nearby is important so there are no outside interruption.
Preparation for myself before treatment to commence
Whilst I have created the right conditions for the treatment to be performed on my client, I now must prepare myself and I do so by sitting quietly on my chair both feet firmly on the ground as I take a few deep breathes doing my breathing techniques as I clear away any negative energies or issues that may be present.
Grounding
Whilst concentrating on the soft relaxing music playing in the back ground I now say an opening prayer of protection to ask for my guides to enter to help me proceed during my reiki treatment to protect myself and my client and to place love light and protection all around the room to help lift the energies up.
I then do a grounding technique of visualising roots growing beneath my feet into mother earth imagining I’m a tree letting the roots sink deep into earth through the layers of soil and rock into the hot molten centre and into the heart of the core, then I stay focused and bring myself back from visualisation.
Centered
I am now centred and grounded ready for my clients treatment to proceed once they arrive, I then remove all my jewelry. For health and safety reasons as not to catch or scratch or cut my client.
On arrival I greeted my client with a smile, her body language seemed a little tense as she returned a smile back. I asked her how she was feeling about having her treatment, as she replied that she was feeling nervous and not knowing what to expect. As this is the first time she has been to have a reiki treatment as this is all new to her.
I offered my client a glass of water to help keep her hydrated as it was hot outside and asked her to take a seat, I make general conversation with her to make her feel at ease to which I notice that she seemed more relaxed within her body language as we spoke.
Explaining Reiki to a new Client
I explained to my client that we would have to fill out a questionnaire consultation record sheet together so we both can go through any previous medical history of health problems past or present that my client may have experienced to date. As I gather the information from my client, I ask her what it is that she is hoping to achieve from the treatment today and to rate their stress levels on a scale of 1 to 4, with 1 being the lowest and 4 being the highest. At this stage I also ask my client if they have concerns about the treatment or if they have any questions they are wanting to ask in general.
Client questionnaire
Requesting the client to sign and date this questionnaire once completed is important before any treatment can commence, as this is to verify my clients consent and shows that my client is happy to proceed with any treatment given by myself as a therapist. It also ensures that the information during our consultation I have given is of their expectations and they have understood the information given to them by myself.
Covering clients expectations
I shall be giving my client information for the aftercare and for the healing process to them to bear in mind what they are likely to experience after their treatment, so as a therapist I ,am safe guarding as I have the relevant information written on record that is there for future reference to refer back to if need be.
Confidentiality
This questionnaire and treatment card once signed will be filed and locked away, in a secure place for my clients confidentiality. Each time my client has more treatments in the near future, their circumstances or health needs may change, as regards to what it is they want from the next treatment I will then ask that they fill out a new questionnaire treatment sheet and sign and date each time as above.
Brief background of my client
My client is a full-time mother to two young children and has suffered previously with anxiety and to date still suffers. During both pregnancies she has to undergo two cesarean sections with both births causing scar tissue which become painful for my client. The main health problems are as follows:-
Establishing my Clients wish from a reiki treatment
She feels the Reiki treatment would help ease the burden of her anxieties she has at present as she finds things for her get to over whelming at times when she’s feeling low. It is important to her that she can have mental focus as well as feeling the benefits of feeling uplifted also by this treatment.
Explaining How Reiki works and how the Energy Flows from Me to her
Having now explained in detail and in length what reiki is all about and what the treatment involves including possible feelings or sensations that may occur during a reiki treatment, I also explain how they would possibly be feeling afterwards.
I explain that I am used as a channel, to receive life force energies from being attuned to reiki myself, as it flows freely through myself to where ever it is needed in the clients body. I do this through different hand positions placed on my clients body, over organs and glands. This in turn directly gives healing to the client as it is designed to channel energies to all of these areas, and where needed the most.
Benefits to Therapist Offering Reiki
If the therapist whom is offering reiki is also in need of healing, they will receive some during the treatment. As reiki helps to assist us to balance our physical and mental state of wellbeing.
Feeling Hot or Cold – meanings
During my client’s treatment they may feel sensations of either becoming hot within themselves or on a certain part of their body as this is indicating that the energy is needed in this area. Or a coolness on a certain parts of their body which indicates an emotional or spiritual blockage which will later require work.
What Tingling Sensations – meaning
By working on their chakra system to unblock and rebalance these they may also experience tingling sensations which shows signs of inflammation in a specific area, as this can also pinpoint areas of repressed anger felt by the client if no physical pain has been felt by the client prior to treatment.
Dull Ache or pains – meaning
If they experience a dull pain then this generally occurs when reiki is being given near an old physical injury or scar tissue that may need extra healing from any previous operation that client may have had. A sharp pain is an indicator of too much energy being concentrated in one particular area on the body causing them to have an imbalance within. If this happens this is an indication to the therapist that this area needs working on to realise the energy built up.
Feelings often experienced after Reiki Treatment
I made them aware of how they would be feeling after their treatment has come to an end, e.g. Lightheaded, they may experience a headache, or feel cold and have Goosebumps or feeling hot and flushed, a total feeling of a weight being lifted or feeling totally relaxed.
Toxin Release
Client may need to flush toxins out through going to the toilet more. This is all a normal part of the healing process and advice to drink plenty of water afterwards is necessary to help with the release of toxins.
Some final preparations for client to do before reiki treatment commences
Aromatherapy Oils
I then mixed some aromatherapy oil in my oil burner. As a qualified holistic therapist in aromatherapy I am aware how essential oils can affect mood. To help with up-liftment and balancing of the emotional and mental and physical state of being, I choose the following 3 oils.
Getting client settled on a Reiki Couch
Whilst playing some soft relaxing music in the back ground to lighten the mood and help relax my client further, I place a pillow at the head of the couch for my client to feel comfortable whilst laying on down as this takes any strain away supporting her head and neck. Having also ensured the couch is the correct height for me to work from so that I do not suffer from back strain.
Support
I have another pillow that is going to be placed underneath my clients knees to help support her during the treatment taking away any pressure or weight from her lower back. I ask my client to gently get onto the couch laying on her back with her arms straight by her side, and her legs uncrossed as this is necessary as this helps the flow of reiki going to where it is needed. I then ask that she relax and take some slow deep breathes to help ease her into the treatment before we begin.
Whilst my client is doing this I go and wash my hands to drain away any negative energy placing my fingertips downwards letting the water run between my fingers. I then dry them on a clean towel. I return to the treatment room and at the head of the couch where my clients head is I draw in on connecting with my spirit guides as I use the 3 hand positions required to assist before opening to reiki.
Hand Positions & Timing
1st position of kanji 1
As I place my fingertips together and interlock the other fingers on both hands to assist and bring in the spiritual energy. I hold this position for 30 seconds whilst I take slow deep breaths to help with my giving of reiki.
2nd position of kanji 2
I place the tips of my middle fingers together and interlock the other fingers of both hands as this helps to bring spirit guides closer as it increases the power available to me. I hold this position again for 30 seconds as I carry on with my slow deep breathing to help open me up and stay relaxed.
3rd position of kanji 3
I interlock my fingers so that I can move my palms together my fingers are between my palms as this assists with inner knowing and guidance needed during reiki. I may want to know the real cause of a problem being experienced by the client. I close my eyes and relax and take a few deep breathes and ask my subconscious for what it is I want information on as I wait for an answer.
Having now performed the above Kanji positions I now feel ready to proceed; my client is looking comfortable and relaxed within the whole body.as I check her breathing is slow and soft.
I now ask for the guidance with reiki for healing on all levels for my client mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.
The reiki treatment
Standing to the side of my client I rub my palms of my hands together to help generate the energies to flow and help warm my hands.
I can feel that my hands are starting to tingle and this indicates to me that the energies are flowing,
1st hand position front of the client’s head ¬-hands over the client’s eyes
As I stand behind my client at the top of the bed where her head is I place my hands palm down over her eyes so that my thumbs meet in the middle of their forehead, as this is the first-hand position to engage in reiki. lightly with my fingers closed and cupped around the shape of my client’s face, as this is to ensure that the energies are not scattered.
As I say to my guides reiki on, I feel my hands are warm and tingly whilst doing this as I feel the energies flow I become warm within myself, I observe and tune in to my client on their breathing and their physical state. To make sure that they are alright and not feeling uncomfortable whilst I’m giving reiki.
This will physically help my client with stress levels she is experiencing in hope of reducing them and help aid in better concentration, as this is what my client’s needs are at this present time, to stay focused, I stayed on this position for a good 5 minutes as the tingly calmed down as this is showing me that enough reiki has been given and not to over work it as it may cause an imbalance ,as this is what we don’t want happening, I slowly remove my hands from this position and gently transition to the next area.
2nd hand position on my client’s head on the temples
I am still stood behind my client at the head of the couch I carry on with my breathing deeply and slowly to stay connected and focused upon my client to see how she is responding so far to the treatment, if there is any physical evidence she may be feeling anything whilst I did the 1st hand position, my client still looked in a deep calm relaxed state as her eyes are closed, I sense that my client may be receiving the energies well.as I also feel calm and relaxed whilst giving reiki.
I slowly placed hands over either side of my clients temples fingers faced downward as my thumbs meet in the middle of my clients forehead as this covers the area of the 3rd eye chakra, as I say to my guides reiki on. I can then feel my hands tingle again and warm up as I feel the heat coming from my hands.
This shows me that this area is receiving the reiki it needs in order to elevate the problems my client is facing, at this time, as the physical benefits are good at relieving emotional stress and feeling of mental fatigue as this will help my client with feeling of calm as it helps to rebalance herself mentally, physically ,and emotionally helping my client getting a better night’s sleep thus sharpening her focus and concentration towards life she hopes to achieve.
I work on this area again for a good 5 minutes as the tingling diminishes. I slowly remove my hands from this position and gently transition again to the next area.
3rd hand position back of the client’s head the brain
Still stood in the same position as previous, as I gently roll my clients head one way as I place my hands slowly underneath my client’s head gently cupping the shape of their head palms face up fin
